Treating trauma in children & teens can be an overwhelming experience for a play therapist.
When to ask questions, when to do child centered, making sure you are helping and not harming, keeping the play therapy client CALM and play room safe...
There is SO much happening in trauma informed sessions, that many play therapists often feel imposter syndrome and worry that they might not know enough to really be helpful!
In this training we will review Poly Vagal theory and weave the importance of regulation throughout this trauma informed training. Regulation is KEY when healing through trauma (and to keep things from getting broken in the playroom!).
Assessing the RIGHT (creative and emotional) Hemisphere and lower brain while unpacking trauma is so vital. Children doing Child Centered Play Therapy are already doing this. We will teach you what they are doing and why AND will teach you how to introduce trauma informed activities with your older play therapy clients too.
We take the scary out of it to make trauma informed therapy easy to begin. You can now feel confident!
Child Centered and Ecosystemic play therapy models will be explored.
Be Able to Utilize Creative Play Therapy Tools With Your Child & Teen Clients:
1. Turn your "x" feelings into a cartoon character drawing series prompt
2. The use of various (portable) therapeutic cards to help older children discuss difficult topics
3. The use of sand tray for right brain left brain integration
Learning Objectives
Upon the completion of this course, participants will be able to:
✅ Explain strategies for helping a client remain calm during a play therapy trauma session
✅ Explain tips for when and how to introduce a creative play therapy prompt during a talking session with an older child or teen
✅ Explain tips for noticing when a play therapy client is experiencing a trigger during a trauma session and tips for what to do next
✅ Explain how to ask about trauma and ACES in a parent intake session
✅ Describe the differences between the functions of the higher brain and lower brain, left brain and right brain, in relation to timing play therapy strategies in a trauma focused session
